Both say natural on the front of the box. One is a fruit brewed in water. The other is a leaf that has usually been through a purification plant. Here is the honest comparison, including what monk fruit does badly.

You are standing in the aisle with two small boxes. Both say natural. Both promise no sugar. One costs three euros, the other costs twelve.

So you pick the cheaper one, because on the surface they look like the same product. They are not. One comes from a fruit that people have eaten for more than eight hundred years. The other comes from a leaf, and by the time it reaches most European shelves it has been through a chemical purification process that removes almost everything the leaf started with.

This article compares the two properly. Sweetness, taste, how each one is made, what the research says, and what you actually get for the price. We sell monk fruit, so read what follows with that in mind. We have tried to be fair, including about the things monk fruit does badly.

The word "natural" tells you almost nothing

Nobody regulates the word natural on a sweetener box. A sweetener can start life as a plant, spend a week in an industrial purification line, come out as a white crystalline powder that shares nothing with the plant except a molecule, and still call itself natural.

That is the position most shoppers are in. You want off sugar. You have read that stevia and monk fruit are the two plant options. You cannot tell from the front of the box which one has been through what.

The stakes are real. People come to sweeteners because of diabetes, because of weight, because of their teeth, because a dentist told them to. They deserve to know what they are buying.

Why the comparison confuses everyone

Stevia is sold in two completely different forms

Stevia comes from the leaf of Stevia rebaudiana. Process the leaf gently and you get a dark, almost black, tar-like syrup. It tastes strongly of the plant. Some people love it. Most find the aftertaste overwhelming.

Almost nobody sells that version. What sits on European shelves is the other kind: steviol glycosides purified to a white powder, usually rebaudioside A. Clean, consistent, cheap, and a long way from a leaf.

Both are far too sweet to use on their own

Pure steviol glycosides run somewhere between two hundred and four hundred times sweeter than sugar. Nobody can measure that with a teaspoon. So manufacturers dilute them, usually with erythritol, sometimes with maltodextrin, sometimes with allulose.

Once that happens, most of what you buy is the filler. The stevia is a small fraction. And the filler is often the part that causes trouble.

The label buries the part that matters

Read the ingredients on a stevia tabletop sweetener and you will usually find erythritol listed first, because it makes up the bulk. Erythritol is the ingredient that recent research has questioned, not the stevia. A 2023 study led by the Cleveland Clinic and published in Nature Medicine reported higher rates of heart attack and stroke among people with elevated blood erythritol, and follow-up work looked at how erythritol affects platelets.

Those findings are still debated, and several researchers have pushed back on how strongly they should be read. The practical point for a shopper holds anyway. When someone tells you stevia upset their stomach, the erythritol was usually the cause.

Read the back, not the front

If erythritol or maltodextrin appears first in the ingredient list, you are buying mostly filler. Our liquid has one ingredient. Our powder has two.

Compare them on five things that matter

1. Where each one comes from

Monk fruit is a fruit. Siraitia grosvenorii, known in China as luo han guo, grown on vines in the mountains of Guangxi. People have eaten it and brewed it as a tea since roughly the thirteenth century.

Stevia is a leaf. That distinction matters more than it sounds. Fruit is food by default. Leaves are a mixed category, and plenty of them carry compounds we avoid on purpose.

2. How each one is made

Our monk fruit is a decoction. Fresh fruit goes into water, exactly as you would brew tea. The solids are strained out. The water is boiled off. What remains is concentrated fruit, one ingredient, nothing added. Under EU rules clarified in October 2024, a non-selective aqueous decoction of monk fruit is not a novel food, which is why we can sell it in Europe at all.

Most stevia on the market is made the other way. The leaf is extracted with solvents, filtered, run through resins, and crystallised until only the target sweet molecules remain. That is an efficient process and a legal one. It is also the opposite of gentle.

3. How sweet each one really is

Here the honest answer surprises people. Our liquid is ten to fifteen times sweeter than sugar. Our powder is three to five times sweeter. Most stevia products you can buy in a European supermarket land in a similar range once you account for the bulking agent.

So in practice, spoon for spoon, they behave alike. Neither gives you volume. Neither caramelises. Neither browns a cake. If you want bulk you have to add it yourself, and that job is the same for both.

4. How each one tastes

We will not pretend our product has no aftertaste. It does. It is made from fruit, and fruit has a taste. On its own it tastes closest to honey.

The difference is what kind of aftertaste. Ours is fruity and mild, and most people stop noticing it within a week or two. Whole-leaf stevia gives you a strong herbal bitterness that many people never get used to. Purified stevia tastes cleaner, but carries a metallic bitter edge at higher doses, which is mostly what happens when anything is that concentrated. Take a heaped spoon of plain sugar and you will get a bitter sensation too.

Where each one hides best also differs. Monk fruit disappears in tea, in milk drinks, in yoghurt and in cream. It fights with acidity, so it does not sit well in strongly acidic drinks. Our powder carries a faint earthy note from the tapioca fibre it is sprayed onto.

5. What the research says

This is the part most comparison articles skip, so we will go slowly, and we will point out where the evidence is thin.

On monk fruit. A 2025 systematic review in Nutrients pooled five randomised controlled trials and reported reductions in post-meal glucose of roughly ten to eighteen percent and in insulin response of roughly twelve to twenty-two percent, with no serious adverse effects recorded. An earlier crossover trial in the International Journal of Obesity compared monk fruit, stevia, aspartame and sugar drinks in healthy adults and found no meaningful glucose or insulin rise from the monk fruit drink. Laboratory work also points to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in mogrosides, the sweet molecules in the fruit, though that work is preclinical and should not be read as a health promise.

On stevia, question one: hormones. Steviol glycosides have a steroid-like backbone. A 2016 study in Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology tested stevioside, rebaudioside A and their breakdown product steviol in cell assays. Steviol reduced progesterone receptor activity by about a third, raised progesterone production in a hormone-producing cell line, and triggered a calcium influx in human sperm cells through CatSper, the sperm progesterone receptor. The authors concluded that steviol shows potential to act as an endocrine disruptor.

On stevia, question two: your gut. Steviol glycosides pass through the small intestine intact and get broken down by bacteria in the colon. A 2020 paper in Molecules from Ben-Gurion University found that stevia extract, stevioside, rebaudioside A and steviol all interfered with quorum sensing, the chemical signalling gut bacteria use to coordinate with each other. The compounds did not kill the bacteria. They jammed the communication, which the authors suggested could shift the balance of the microbiome over time.

Now the fair part

Both of those stevia studies were done in dishes, not in people. Cell assays use concentrations a normal diet may never reach. No trial has shown a hormonal problem in humans who eat stevia, and European and international regulators still treat steviol glycosides as safe within an acceptable daily intake of 4 mg per kilo of body weight. Anyone who tells you stevia has been proven harmful is going further than the evidence goes.

Researchers have found signals worth following up in stevia. After eight centuries of people eating monk fruit, nobody has found a comparable signal in the fruit.

Absence of a finding is not proof of safety. We will not dress it up as one.

Why monk fruit helps

Different people arrive here for different reasons. Find yours below.

Diabetes

If you live with diabetes

You have the least room to guess. Our decoction has no glycemic index per portion and contributes around one kilocalorie per serving, replacing roughly twenty from a teaspoon of sugar. The trials above found no meaningful post-meal glucose rise, and customers who test with a glucose meter report the same.

Speak to your diabetes team before changing anything, and keep testing.

Keto and low carb

If you count carbohydrates

Our label shows 69 g of carbohydrate per 100 g, and that number frightens people who have not read it properly. Most of it is fibre and mogrosides, which your body does not convert to energy, and EU labelling rules make us count them anyway.

In a portion you actually use, the figure rounds to nothing. Nothing on keto has zero carbohydrate, including nuts and meat.

Digestion

If your gut is sensitive

Most complaints about stevia products come from the erythritol they are cut with. Sugar alcohols pull water into the bowel and ferment, and above roughly twenty grams a lot of people get bloating and worse.

Our liquid contains one ingredient. Our powder adds tapioca fibre, a prebiotic with no glycemic load.

Hormonal health

If you think about your hormones

Plenty of people cut sugar precisely because they are managing hormonal health. Most of them have never heard that the sweetener they switched to carries an open research question about progesterone signalling.

You may decide the cell studies are not enough to act on. You should at least get to make that decision knowingly.

Family

If you are buying for children

Parents ask us this constantly. Our answer is that a decoction of fruit and water is a short ingredient list, and short ingredient lists are easier to justify to yourself at breakfast.

We keep the same rule as always. No medical claims, and check with your paediatrician if your child has a condition.

Dental

If you look after your teeth

Dentists order from us more than any other profession, and the reason is simple. Mouth bacteria cannot ferment mogrosides into acid. No acid, no enamel damage.

That holds for stevia as well, so this one is a tie between the two, and a clear win for either over sugar.

How to use it

  1. Tea and herbal infusions

    The easiest place to start. Two or three drops of the liquid in a mug. Tea is where monk fruit vanishes completely, which makes sense given the fruit has been brewed as a tea in China for centuries. Add the drops after the tea has brewed, then taste before you add more.

  2. Milk drinks and hot chocolate

    Milk and cream are the friendliest carriers we know. Fat rounds the sweetness and hides any edge. Try three or four drops in warm milk with cocoa. This is also the best way to introduce it to someone who has had a bad experience with sweeteners before.

  3. Yoghurt, porridge and overnight oats

    Stir the liquid through plain yoghurt with a spoon of berries. The berries bring their own sweetness and body, and the monk fruit lifts the whole thing without turning it into dessert. For porridge, add it at the end, off the heat.

  4. Creams, custards and no-bake desserts

    Whipped cream, panna cotta, cheesecake filling, mousse. These are the recipes where monk fruit performs best, because none of them need sugar for structure or browning. Sweeten the mixture cold, taste, adjust, then chill.

  5. Lemonades and homemade cordials

    Sweeten your lemonade base before you add the lemon, not after. Acidity sharpens the aftertaste, so building the sweetness first and cutting it with citrus afterwards gives a cleaner result. Mint and cucumber help too.

One honest warning

Skip coffee. Coffee is acidic, and acidity is where monk fruit shows its aftertaste most. We would rather tell you now than have you write us a disappointed review later.

On baking. Use the powder, not the liquid. Sugar in a cake does three jobs: sweetness, volume and browning. The liquid only does the first, so a cake made with it comes out dense. The powder gives back some volume, and recipes built around creams and fruit fillings work best of all.

Questions people ask

Is monk fruit better than stevia?

For most people who buy either one, yes. Monk fruit is made from a fruit rather than a leaf, our version goes through water and heat rather than solvents and resins, and no research has flagged a hormonal or microbiome question against it. Stevia is cheaper and easier to find, and the counter-arguments against it come from laboratory studies rather than human trials.

Is monk fruit sweeter than stevia?

Molecule for molecule, no. Pure steviol glycosides are stronger than pure mogrosides. As sold, they are close. Our liquid sits at ten to fifteen times sugar, our powder at three to five times, and most European stevia products land in a comparable range once the bulking agent is counted.

Which one tastes better?

Most people who try both prefer monk fruit, though it depends on which stevia. Against whole-leaf stevia the difference is dramatic, because whole-leaf is intensely herbal. Against purified stevia the gap narrows, and some people cannot tell them apart in a strongly flavoured drink.

Does monk fruit have an aftertaste?

Yes. Anyone selling you a sweetener with no aftertaste at all is stretching the truth. Ours is fruity rather than chemical, it is strongest in acidic foods, and most customers stop registering it after the first week.

Is stevia bad for you?

No regulator says so, and EFSA and JECFA both treat steviol glycosides as safe within the acceptable daily intake. What exists are laboratory findings around progesterone signalling and around bacterial communication in the gut, which researchers have flagged as worth studying further. Those are open questions, not verdicts.

Why does stevia upset my stomach?

Usually it is not the stevia. Most tabletop stevia is mostly erythritol, and sugar alcohols cause bloating, gas and loose stools in a lot of people once you go past roughly twenty grams a day. Check the ingredient list and see whether erythritol or maltodextrin sits at the top.

Is monk fruit safe during pregnancy?

There is no evidence of harm, and the fruit has a long history of food use. There is also no large pregnancy trial, because those trials are rarely run. Ask your midwife or doctor, and treat anyone who gives you a confident yes or no without evidence with suspicion.

Can I use monk fruit and stevia together?

You can, and some commercial blends do exactly that. The two sweetness profiles cover each other's weak points. If you are buying blends, read what else is in the packet.

Why is monk fruit so much more expensive than stevia?

Because it is made from fresh fruit, and a lot of it. The fruit does not keep, so it has to be processed quickly after harvest, close to where it grows. Stevia leaves dry, store and ship cheaply, and the purification process scales. That price gap is real and it is not going away.

Does monk fruit affect blood sugar?

The trials run so far found no meaningful rise in glucose or insulin from monk fruit drinks in healthy adults, and the 2025 review reported reductions in post-meal glucose and insulin compared with sugar. Per portion our product has no glycemic index. If you manage diabetes, keep testing rather than taking our word for it.

Is monk fruit legal in the EU and the UK?

Ours is, because it is an aqueous decoction, and EU rules clarified in October 2024 confirm that non-selective aqueous decoctions of monk fruit are not novel foods. Concentrated monk fruit products of the kind sold widely in the United States do not have the same status here. That is why so few monk fruit products exist on European shelves.

Does monk fruit contain erythritol?

Ours does not. Our liquid is one ingredient. Our powder is monk fruit decoction sprayed onto tapioca fibre. Many products labelled monk fruit, especially imports, are mostly erythritol with a small percentage of monk fruit, so read the back of the packet rather than the front.

Final thoughts

Neither of these will taste like sugar. Nothing does. If you are hoping for a swap so perfect you forget you made it, every sweetener on the market will disappoint you, including ours.

What you can choose is what you put in your body every day for the next twenty years. One option is a leaf, purified in a plant, usually diluted with something that gives a good number of people digestive trouble, and carrying two research questions nobody has closed. The other is a fruit, brewed in water, with one ingredient and eight centuries of people eating it.

Monk fruit costs more. It has a taste. It does not bake like sugar and it does not belong in your coffee. We would rather tell you that up front than sell you a promise you would return in a month.

If those trade-offs sound acceptable, you will probably like it.
